摘要 1310350 Laminates CIBA-GEIGY (UK) Ltd 29 Oct 1970 [28 Nov 1969] 58434/69 Heading B5N [Also in Division D1] Laminates are prepared by heating superposed layers of the resin/fibre tapes described below at 170‹ C. and 7 kg./sq. cm. pressure for 1 hour. For greater strength the tapes may be cut so that the fibres in a layer lie at an angle to those in adjacent layers. Tows of continuous parallel carbon fibres are drawn from reels suspended in framework 1, through a solution of a first resin in bath 2 and shaped into ribbons of constant width. The ribbons are dried and aligned into an abutting edge to edge relationship. A film of second resin is applied to each side of the ribbons and the composite hot calendered so that the second resin flows about the ribbons to form a coherent tape. The tows are formed into ribbons by entering the resin tank 2 through circular holes (23, Fig. 2, not shown) in its cover, passing around grooved roller or fixed smooth surfaced rod (3), and exiting through rectangular slots 21. The drying oven 5, electrically heated to 70‹ C., has a partition 6 to keep solvent driven off the ascending ribbons from the descending ribbons. Tension is introduced by stationary grooved roller 8. The ribbons are aligned by grooved rollers 9, 10. In the case of a seven ribbon, 2À54 cm. tape, roller 10 has three 0À363 cm. grooves (63, Fig. 6, not shown) and four 0À363 cm. lands (64), the lands being aligned with four 0À363 cm. grooves (61) on roller 9. The seven ribbons emerge in abutting, edge-to-edge fashion, and are hot calendered between resin films supplied by rollers 13, 14, by means of rollers 11, 12, having a 2À54 cm. groove (71, Fig. 7, not shown) on roller 12 and a corresponding shoulder (72) on roller 11. One or both rollers 11, 12 is heated to 70‹ C. Rollers 9, 10 and 11, 12 are spring-biased together. Alternative shaping devices to the slots (21) are described. Thus two plates with a separation equal to the desired thickness of the ribbons may carry pegs whose separation determines the thickness. Alternatively the shaping device may comprise 2 non-rotating grooved rods. In another embodiment an individual bath in the form of a U-tube (81, Fig. 8, not shown) is provided for each tow, which exits through a flattened cone (82). A list of thermoplastic and thermosetting resins is given. In the example, the first resin is an epoxide formed from 2,2-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl) propane and epichlorohydrin, and is dissolved in methoxyethanol or other volatile solvent in the presence of dicyandiamide, and the same epoxide was used as the resin film, which was supported on a releasable paper backing. Between 5 and 40% of the resin is applied in bath 2. Preferably one or both resins remain at the A or B stage.
