1297594 Unsaturated esters of polyvinyl alcohols GAFCORP 13 Jan 1971 [14 Jan 1970] 1743/71 Heading C3P [Also in Division G2] Partially or completely hydrolysed polyvinyl alcohols are rendered light sensitive by the introduction of one or more ester groups of the formula wherein X is halogen, C 1-4 alkoxy, phenoxy, allyl-oxy, C-heterocyclic or a polycyclic aryl group, Y is hydrogen, halogen, cyclo-alkyl or a C 1-4 alkyl group, and Z is the polyvinyl alcohol residue. The groups are introduced by the reaction of the polyvinyl alcohol with acid chlorides such as 3-butoxy-, 2-cyclohexyl-, 3- methoxy-, 3-chloro-, 3-bromo-2-methyl-, 2- chloro - 3 - methoxy-, 2 - methoxy-3-phenoxy-, 3-ethoxy-, 2,3-dichloro-, 3-furyl-, 3-phenoxy-, 3-naphthyl- or 3-anthryl-acryloyl chloride. In the examples, highly hydrolysed polyvinyl alcohols are esterified with some of the above reactants in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, with or without pyridine, as solvent(s), and the esterified products separated. The unsaturated ester groups may be cross-linked by exposure to light and the polymers therefore find use in photoresists. |
