A method of and apparatus for winding strip material onto a drum (27A, 28A) from a supply of the material in which a "slack length" (3A) is produced in the strip material (3) at a predetermined location between the drum and the supply. The "slack length" is produced by allowing the strip material to droop catenary fashion between two rollers (13, 15) spaced apart in the feed path. The edge region or edge of the strip material in the "slack length" is arranged to contact and move across an inclined surface. The winding conditions onto the drum are such that the lowermost part of the catenary is maintained between upper and lower levels (21, 22), the position of the lowermost part being continuously monitored. |
