The invention relates to a mechanism which converts an oscillating translational driving motion, for example that of a piston, or an oscillating pivoting motion into a continuous rotary motion of a driving shaft. This mechanism replaces the positive and frictional connection which exists in the crank mechanism between the piston, the connecting rod and the crank shaft. Although it transmits the piston forces to the driving shaft, it does not permit a reaction from the driving shaft to the piston. The operation of this mechanism is based on the machine element known as a free wheel or one-way clutch, which blocks the rotary motion, for example, of a shaft relative to a hub, in one direction. Different variants obtained by combining the operation of different machine elements, for example that of a spur-wheel tooth system with a flexible transmission, make it possible to convert not only oscillating motions into a rotary motion but also to produce mechanism designs whose rotational speed and torque can be varied.
