<p>Pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN), is obtained as freely flowing crystals by stirring an aqs. acetone (pref.) solution of PETN containing 0.1-10% of a higher homologue. The latter may be dipentaerythritol hexanitrate, tripentaerythritol octonitrate and/or tetrapentaerythritol decanitrate. Soft crystals may be obtd. at 25-35 degrees C, hard, large crystals at 60-65 degrees C and small crystals from well-stirred solutions. Explosive properties e.g. detonation speed are better than for PETN previously produced.</p> |
