The chain has grip elements which are pressed in a non-displaceable fashion on specific chain elements without, however, being welded to them. The cross-section of the grip elements has a flat base which is wide enough to ensure a secure seat and to limit possible rotation of the chain and tapers as far as the running face of the grip element facing away from the chain element. As a result, a secure seat of the grip element is achieved and, in addition, a core part of its cross-section, near to its base, is largely excluded from the hardening process. <IMAGE>
