In a vehicle brake system a brake tandem master cylinder (1) can be actuated by a brake booster (2), which is fed from a hydraulic energy supply system (10). Wheel brake cylinders of a lefthand front wheel brake (FL) and a righthand front wheel brake (FR) are arranged on the brake master cylinder (1) by way of brake lines (30, 31), in which lie the control valves (35, 36, 38, 39) of an antilock device. In order to supply the wheel brake cylinders with pressure medium from the energy supply system (10) and to hold the brake tandem master cylinder (1) in a ready position when the antilock device is in operation, in which position further actuation of the brake is ensured should the energy supply system or the antilock device fail, the brake lines (30, 31) can be connected by way of a control valve (49) and non-return valves (45, 46) downstream of this to the booster chamber (17) of the brake booster (2) and controllable non-return valves (42, 43) are provided in the brake lines (30, 31) between the brake tandem master cylinder and the connection points of the control valve (49), which non-return valves are switched by the pressure introduced by way of the control valve (49) into a closed position in which only a return of pressure medium to the brake tandem master cylinder (1) is possible (fig. 1). <IMAGE>
