[Also in Division C3] Substrates of steel, aluminium, glass, galvanized iron and masonry are coated with a composition comprising an aqueous emulsion of an epoxy resin cured by an adduct of a C 2-12 aliphatic monoepoxide or an aromatic substituted aliphatic monoepoxide with an aminoamide obtained by reacting a fat acid with an alkylene polyamine. Preferred aminoamides (which may be added as solutions in inert-solvents) are prepared by reacting a polymeric fatty acid (especially from tall oil fatty acids) with H 2 NR'N(R")(R'NH) n H in which R' is a C 2-6 alkylene radical, R" is H or R'NH 2 and n is 0 to 3, e.g. triethylenetetramine. The monoepoxide may be styrene oxide, phenyl glycidyl ether or cresyl glycidyl ether and may be reacted with the aminoamide at 85-150‹C so that one epoxide equivalent is present per primary amine group equivalent of the aminoamide. The compositions may contain some free polymeric fatty acid and pigments. The compositions may be supplied as a two part pack one part comprising the epoxy resin emulsion and the other the aminoamide-monoepoxide adduct. When mixed they have a pot life of 4-5 hours at 23‹C.
