PURPOSE:To obtain easily sinterable aluminum nitride powder having small and uniform particle size, and useful as a material for high-temperature use, by calcining a mixture of alumina powder, carbon and a rare earth metal oxide in a nitrogen-containing non-oxidizing atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:A mixture of alumina powder or a compound forming alumina powder at a high temperature (e.g. aluminum nitrite) and carbon powder or a compound forming carbon powder at a high temperature (e.g. various resinous substance) is added with a rare earth metal oxide or a compound forming a rare earth metal oxide at a high temperature (e.g. yttrium nitrate), and the obtained mixture is calcined in a nitrogen-containing non-oxidizing atmosphere such as nitrogen, ammonia gas, or a mixture of nitrogen and argon, etc., at about 1,400-1,850 deg.C. The amounts of the carbon powder and rare earth metal oxide are 0.35-2pts.wt. and 0.005-1pt.wt. per 1pt.wt. of alumina powder, and the rare earth metal oxide is preferably yttrium oxide. |
