The invention relates to a purified virus of the LAV type containing an envelope antigen having a molecular weight of the order of 110,000, and more especially to this antigen itself. This antigen may be detected by labelling the virus with a high concentration of [<35>S]cysteine. The invention relates still more especially to a method for the diagnosis of the presence of antibodies against the aetiological agent of Aids in the serum of patients suffering from Aids or LAS or of asymptomatic carriers of the virus. Lastly, it relates to immunogenic compositions containing the antigen of the type in question as an immunogenic principle.
