The invention relates to a process pertaining to the longitudinal displacement of sawn timber pieces in connection with a traverse conveyor 2 and a longitudinal conveyor 3 for the sawn timber pieces 1. According to the process, sawn timber pieces 1 are transported by means of the traverse conveyor 2 in such a way that the ends 1a of the sawn timber pieces run essentially along the same entry line X. For the sawn timber pieces 1, a necessary longitudinal displacement y1;y2 is determined before the sawn timber pieces 1 reach a stop region A in which the longitudinal conveyor 3 is situated and in which the said longitudinal displacement is executed. Where the said necessary longitudinal displacement y1 is directed in opposite direction from the entry line X in relation to the longitudinal direction of the longitudinal conveyor 3, the longitudinal displacement y1 is executed by means of an adjustable stop 4 situated in the stop region A. Where the necessary longitudinal displacement y2 is in the transport direction of the longitudinal conveyor 3 from the entry line X, the sawn timber pieces 1 are displaced by means of the longitudinal conveyor 3 by a greater distance than the determined longitudinal displacement y2, after which the sawn timber pieces 1 are displaced by means of the adjustable stop 4 to the final position corresponding to the longitudinal displacement y2. When the sawn timber pieces 1 are transported by means of the traverse conveyor 2 over the stop region A, the sawn timber pieces 1 are held throughout in the grip of the longitudinal conveyor 3, the ends 1a of the sawn timber pieces being held by means of the longitudinal conveyor 3 in contact with the adjustable stop 4 within the whole of the stop region A.
