The invention relates to a band saw in which a device 39 detects the cutting error of the blade and stops the machine when the latter is too far removed from a value which can be revised as a function of the cutting width in the workpiece W. A device 45 detects the presence of the blade over a driving wheel 21 and stops the operation of the machine when the blade leaves the wheel. A metal brush 47 cleans the blade, and it can easily be replaced. Finally, a carrier 59 breaks up the sawdust which can build up and thus allows easy evacuation. Application to band saws intended to automatically saw pieces of wood.
