A ball bearing (21) is provided, the external race (25) of which is associated with the hub (28) of the fan, and is made up of two half-rings (26,27) separated perpendicularly to the bearing axis. One of the half-rings is force-fitted and centred in the fan hub, while the other half-ring is floating on the balls. An axial preloading device (33) which is hooked through the fan hub (29), acts against the side of the free half-ring to load it toward the fixed half-ring. A coupling ring (33) is fitted between the two half-rings. USE/ADVANTAGE - Automatic limiting of drive for automotive alternator fan to speed at which cooling equilibrium is reached, reducing noise and increasing overall energy efficiency.
