The invention relates to a system for connecting a multiplicity of subscribers (3) to a central station (1) via optical waveguides. The optical waveguides of physically adjacent subscribers are in each case coupled in an out-of-area device via wavelength multiplexers and demultiplexers to a common optical waveguide which is connected to the central station. A dedicated wavelength ( lambda 1 to lambda n) is allocated to each subscriber. Through multiple use of the connection between the central station and the out-of-area device, albeit a purely passive optically selective out-of-area device, the costs of the system can be kept down, its reliability can be increased and its flexibility and extendability can be guaranteed. <IMAGE>
