The protective plates (4,5) are pivotably attached by hinges (3) to the longitudinal parts of the escape ladder, and fall outwards to approx. 90 deg. under the effect of springs from a position where they are approx. parallel with the plane of the ladder (1). The springs are incorporated in the hinges (3). The plates are retained by lock components (6,7) in the position where they are parallel to the plane of the ladder. The lock components are releasable by operation of a device fitted with a hand grip (8). A stop (12) prevents the plates falling outwards in excess of 90 deg. from the position where they are parallel with the ladder plane. The stop (12) comprises extended parts of the plates (4,5) beyond the hinges (3), such parts forming a support against the wall or against the ladder side edges. |
