The invention relates to a process for the preparation of triarylsulphonium polyfluorometal salts or triarylsulphonium polyfluorosemimetal salts by oxidation of a diaryl sulphide under dehydrating conditions in the presence of a strong protonic acid. The resulting triarylsulphonium acid salt can then be reacted directly with an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal polyhalide (polyhalogen salt).
