In order to monitor automatically operating metering devices in which greasy substances of a highly viscous consistency, such as for example lubrication grease or soldering paste, are to be applied finely metered from nozzles to surfaces of components by means of compressed air, the greasy substance is heated on the way to the outlet of the nozzle and subsequently the radiant heat of the greasy substance emerging from the nozzle is pyroelectrically detected and converted into a signal voltage with which the delivery of the greasy substance which has taken place or (in the event of a fault) has not taken place is displayed and evaluated.
