<p>A data entry terminal (10) having a display (18) and a keyboard (14) containing ten numerical keys and three function keys (16) is provided with the capability of entering alphabetical and other characters and of editing displayed data. A plurality of clusters (46-1 to 46-6) ten characters, each cluster being arranged in an array corresponding to the ten keys on the keyboard (14), is displayed. Any selected one of the clusters (46-1 to 46-6) may be highlighted e.g. by reverse video display, the highlighted cluster indicating the characters which will be entered into the terminal (10) when corresponding keys on the keybord (14) are operated. The clusters (46-6 to 46-6) are successively selected in a left-to-right or a right-to-left direction by operating a corresponding one of two function keys (16-R, 16-L). Certain ones of the characters enable editing functions and movement of a cursor (84), whereby displayed messages may be changed.</p> |
