A centrifugal-drive internal-combustion engine has a free piston, on which a centrifugal mass is arranged rotatably about an axis of centre of rotation. As a result of the to-and-fro movement of the free piston, the centrifugal mass is thrown around its axis of centre of rotation; its rotation is transmitted, via an intermediate shaft displaceable telescopically in itself, to an output shaft mounted fixedly relative to the housing. To start the internal-combustion engine, two drive motors are provided, one setting the free piston in to-and-fro movements and the other drive motor setting the centrifugal mass in rotation about its axis of centre of rotation 7 from the output shaft 22. An intelligent, preferably electronic control device monitors the starting operation and ensures the rotational speed of the centrifugal mass suitable for the cycle of movement of the free piston 3, 5. The drive of the free piston 3, 5 can take place via a crank mechanism 8, 11-14 or electromagnetically when the internal-combustion engine is started.
