Steady rest with a rectilinearly displaceable first holding arm and with two second pivotable holding arms which are arranged on both sides of the latter and which are respectively coupled via a gearwheel mechanism to the displaceable holding arm designed as a rack, there being provided at the inner ends of the pivotable holding arms, to reduce the requirements for production accuracy, toothed segments which mesh with a respective adjustable gearwheel which, after the adjustment of the steady rest, is connected fixedly in terms of rotation to a second gearwheel concentric thereto and meshing with the rack.
