Rod-like material such as tubes, round steel and sectional steel is transported in steps transversely to the longitudinal direction of the individual parts using a lifting beam, which passes through a curve which is steep in the lifting and laying region and very flat in the transport region. To this end, the lifting beam is indirectly connected to the fixedly positioned base frame via a rocker and a connecting rod, specifically via rocker levers. The rocker levers are pivotably arranged on the base frame and connected at their free ends by means of a coupling rod. As the crankshaft rotates, the rocker is lifted and lowered according to the crank throw, a corresponding longitudinal movement resulting from the lever transmission of the rocker. The flat, i.e. elliptical coupling curve is produced by superposition of the movements. <IMAGE>
