The invention relates to a process for thermally regenerating active carbon loaded with impurities originating from flue gases by bringing the active carbon into contact with a heat transfer medium heated to a temperature above the regeneration temperature of the active carbon, to desorb the gaseous impurities and remove the desorption gas, composed of heat transfer medium gas and gaseous impurities, from the regeneration zone. The process is characterised in that the active carbon is brought into contact with a heat transfer medium gas, preferably in countercurrent, the gaseous impurities are removed from the desorption gas, preferably by means of wet scrubbing, the desorption gas is heated by contact, preferably in countercurrent, with the regenerated carbon, which is still at regeneration temperature, it is then heated further to a temperature above the regeneration temperature, preferably by means of fresh heat transfer medium gas, and finally, it is used again to regenerate used active carbon.
