To exclude, in the rehabilitation of abandoned landfills posing a hazard to the groundwater, the danger arising in known injection processes of releasing enclosed pollutants by mechanical aids, and to make possible a cost-saving rehabilitation of the landfill, the landfill, after its surface has been sealed against penetration by precipitation water, is to be contained at the sides in its immediate vicinity by a wall extending to the upper region of the layer conducting the groundwater, then the groundwater present beneath the landfill and/or in its vicinity is to be conducted to the landfill in a defined manner, and an environmentally acceptable material increasing the resistance to flow to the groundwater in the ground is to be introduced into this groundwater stream "upstream" outside the landfill. Ferric incrustation of the layer conducting the groundwater is proposed by introducing an oxidising agent, e.g. air, for oxidising the iron hydrogen carbonate very often present in the groundwater and/or plugging by means of limestone formation, introducing CO2-enriched air. An aqueous solution of an environmentally acceptable organic resin can also be introduced.
