PURPOSE:To improve the compression efficiency by measuring white/black run length of a picture data in the picture data compression system coding linear run length coding and coding a value being one over an integer of the measured run length so as to reduce the quantity of information after compression. CONSTITUTION:When the picture data DATA is changed, e.g., from white to black level, a change point detection signal is outputted from an exclusive OR gate 2. When a gate 4 is suppressed and the count-up of the run length counter 5 is stopped. Further, the state of a T-flip-flop 3 is inverted. A k-shot of shift pulses are given to a shift register 7 from a shift pulse generating circuit 6, the run length data is shifted right by k-bit and a value dividing the run length by an integer 2<k> is inputted to a coding ROM8. The coding ROM8 discriminates it as the input of white run length from the state of the T-flip-flop 3 and outputs an MH code to the run length after division inputted from the shift register 7. |
