PURPOSE:To obtain a zinc alkaline battery whose mercury content is decreased, hydrogen gas evolution is retarded, but discharge performance is still kept high by using a zinc alloy prepared by adding a specified amount of lead, cadmium, and gallium to zinc as it is or after amalgamation as a negative active material. CONSTITUTION:Zinc alloy containing 0.01-0.5wt% lead, 0.01-0.5wt% cadmium, and 0.01-0.5wt% gallium is used as a negative active material. A zinc alkaline battery is obtained by using alkaline solution mainly comprising potassium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide as an electrolyte, the above zinc alloy as an active material of a negative electrode 4, and manganese dioxide, silver oxide, or oxygen as an active material of a positive electrode 2. In an air cell having a gas vent or a zinc alkaline battery having a hydrogen absoption means, zinc alloy having 1.0wt% or less mercury or no mercury can be used preferably as a negative actived material, because allowable hydrogen gas evolution volume is relatively large. |
