<p>PURPOSE:To produce the titled compound without causing the problem of waste- water treatment, by reacting an olefin with CO in the presence of a sulfuric acid-cuprous oxide catalyst, extracting the reaction product, and washing the resultant complex of the tertiary carboxylic acid and sulfuric acid with water, thereby recovering and reusing the sulfuric acid. CONSTITUTION:An olefin is made to react with CO in the presence of a sulfuric acid-cuprous oxide catalyst preferably under 10-15kg/cm<2> pressure, and the reaction product is mixed with an extractant and separated into the aqueous catalyst solution and the oily extracted liquid. The extracted liquid is washed with water to decompose the complex of the tertiary carboxylic acid and sulfuric acid existing in the extracted liquid. The aqueous layer is recycled to the reaction system, and the oil layer is distilled to separate the extractant and obtain the objective tertiary carboxylic acid. When the extraction of the reaction product is carried out under an atmosphere to keep the cuprous oxide from oxidation, preferably in a CO atmosphere, the catalyst liquid can be recovered without lowering the catalytic activity, and the recovered catalyst can be reused.</p> |
