The invention relates to an addition to a cigarette, the purpose of which is to encourage the smoker to smoke it in stages, the means being to slow down or even halt the propagation of the burn at a point which will allow the smoker to return to the cigarette at a later stage. This addition consists of a ring 3 which surrounds the tobacco 1, this ring being a folded strip of either metal foil or a paper that is a very poor conductor of combustion. In either case, when the combustion is slowed down, the cigarette will go out unless the smoker draws more deeply several times once the ring is reached. As a variant, a disc 5 could interrupt the column of tobacco underneath the ring, this disc being either totally impervious to combustion - in which case the smoker would be compelled to stop - or simply reinforce the effect of the ring. <IMAGE>
