A description is given of a vertical storage apparatus (1), in particular for motor vehicles (9), having a vertically upright frame which is formed by two interconnected, vertically upright load-bearing columns (5), there being arranged in each load-bearing column (5), in each case guided in two vertical guides (6), an endless and drivable, circulating chain comprising individual chain links (8) which are each connected to one another via a linking bolt (7) mounted in the guides (6). The respective chain can be deflected both at the bottom, open end and at the top, open end of the guides (6) and each second chain link (8) exhibits a load-bearing arm (12) which extends outwardly away from the frame. The two chains each exhibit one load-bearing arm (12) at the same height in each case, on the free ends of which there are mounted, in a swinging manner, gondolas (3) which are formed by horizontal storage platforms (11), on the longitudinal ends of which there are arranged struts (13, 14, 15). In order that the overall height of the apparatus (1) does not exceed the dimension which is permissible for urban areas, but without reducing the capacity of the apparatus (1), the invention proposes to design said apparatus such that a considerable amount of the load-bearing columns (5) is arranged beneath the ground surface (4).
