A light-weight apparatus, which is therefore convenient to handle, is provided for trimming wall coverings of all kinds which have been pasted immediately previously and for cutting off all coverings or thin webs of PVC or a similar material. In this apparatus, a knife of adjustable length is accommodated in a multipart flat housing and is driven via a cam disc connected to a motor drive shaft so that, with each rotation of the drive shaft, the knife executes at least an upward and downward reciprocal movement. If the apparatus according to the invention is moved along an edge, an even cut can be made, for example, on a wall covering which has been pasted up immediately previously by means of the knife movimg upwards and downwards. In order to enable the knife to be removed from the guide and/or adjusted in respect of its length, the guide is pivotably or retractably mounted on the housing. Furthermore, the knife and the guide can be provided with oblique or horizontal cutting edges, so that wall coverings or web-shaped material can be cut as with scissors during the reciprocal movements of the knife. According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, an L-shaped shoulder with a recess for receiving the knife blade is provided on the knife guide to give protection against injury and to receive a web of wall covering which has just been pasted up.
