By fitting drive flaps to the aircraft tyres, the wheels are accelerated to a rotation speed which is close to the air speed before the aircraft touches down on the runway. In consequence, virtually no friction losses occur on the tyres during touchdown on the runway, and the jerky movement is obviated. The life of the tyres is increased and the risk of tyres bursting is reduced.
