A tooth exciting appts. includes a cylindrical housing, having an opening in its front end and an acoustic transducer disposed within the housing to produce vibrational energy of a predetermined frequency. A support is supplied for securing the vibrator(23), formed by the combination of the acoustic transducer and the transmissing member, to the housing at a point of balance thereof. The appts. is operated so that the feed rate of the tool is less than the max. vibrational speed of the tooth.
