A wire rope or cable formed with an eye of predetermined size and in which the ends thereof are permanently secured in abutting relationship by a sleeve or by splicing. is protected by a coiled spring that surrounds the wire of the eye, the spring having an internal diameter greated than that of the cable. The spring also serves to restore the eye to an open condition after each loading thereof. The extremities of the spring may bear against the sleeve or splicing means whereby the eye is formed.
