Cpds. of formula (I) and, when Q is a pyridinyl gp., their acid addn. salts are new: (Q is 3- or 4-pyridinyl (opt. mono-or di-substd. by 1-4C alkyl), 3- or 4-hydroxyphenyl or 3- or 4-methoxyphenyl; R1 and R2 are H or Me; and R is 1-4C alkyl). - (I) where Q is hydroxyphenyl or (opt. substd.) pyridinyl are cardiotonic agents which increase heart contractility. They can be administered orally or parenterally. (I) where Q is methoxyphenyl are intermediate for the active cpds. where Q is hydroxyphenyl. - 3,4-Dihydro-6-methyl-5-(4-pyridinyl)-2(1H)-pyridinone (Ia); the corresp. 4,6-and 3,6-dimethyl cpds.; 3,4-dihydro-5-(4-hydroxyphenyl)- 6-methyl-2(1H)-pyridinone- and the corresp. 3,6-dimethyl cpd. are specifically claimed.
