A stable, aq. conc. fabric softening compsn. comprises (A) 12-20 wt.% of a cationic softener of formula (I) where R1, R2, R3 and R4 each independently represent a 1-30C aliphatic radical with at least 2 or R1, R2, R3 and R4 being 14-30C alkyl; (B) 1-5 wt.% of an amine salt and (C) 0.5-5 wt.% of an electrolyte. - Compsn. is prepd. in one of following ways, (i) An aq. soln. of the amine salt in warm water at up to 80 deg. C, pref. about 70 deg. C is first prepd. A melted cationic softener is added to form a gel, the gel is cooled to below 40 deg. C, (pref. just below 40 deg. C), and then the electrolyte is added to break the gel. The mixt. is cooled to room temp. with stirring. (ii) In a modification of 1, before adding the cationic softener to the amine salt soln., the pH is adjusted with alkaline material to above 10, pref. to 12. The melted cationic softener is added, the pH is readjusted to below 7, pref. the compsn. is cooled to room temp. and then the electrolyte is added to adjust the viscosity. - Pref. compsn. in which the ratio of (A) to (B) is about 40:1 to 2:1. Pref. the amt. of cpd. (A) is 12% and that of cpd. (B) is 2%. The total softener concn. is 12-15 wt.%.
