1-Aryl 2-(4-diaryl methyl -piperazin-1-yl) ethanones and their pharmaceutically-acceptable acid addn. salts, are prepd. by (a) treating an acetophenone with ethylene glycol and a brominating agent, e.g. phenyl trimethylammonium tribromide or pyridine tribromide, to obtain the cpd. of formula (I); (b) treating (I) with a benzhydryl piperazine (II) in solvent, e.g. dimethylacetamide, methyl piperidone, acetonitrile or DMSO, to obtain (III); and (c) treating this with mineral acid, e.g. sulphuric or hydrochloric acid.
