<p>EP--94147 A Cubic BN or diamond compacts containing an interstitial metal phase are made by conventional hot pressing at high temp. and pressure particles of cubic BN or diamond in contact with a catalyst and a metal or alloy which has a lower melting point than the catalyst, is miscible with and does not interfere with the catalyst. The preferred metals are Cu, Sn, Al, Zn, Mg, Sb, Co-Cu, Ni-Cu. The catalyst may be a cemented carbide or carbice powder or the catalyst may be an alloy with the added metal. - Used for cutting tools, drill bits, dressing tools, dies wear resistant parts and composites with cemented carbides. The metal melts before the catalyst lubricates the powder and removes impurities and results in more uniform compaction and a reduction in flaw frequency.
