Motor vehicle engine exhaust system has an intermediate silencer connected to the exhaust manifold leading then to a final silencer. The final silencer has around the periphery of a casing, a series of annular spaces sepd. by perforated radial ribs. Some of the annular elements are filled with a catalytic material for purificn. of the exhaust gases. The hot exhaust gas drives a small free propeller which draws in additional air from the exterior to reduce exhaust system pressure losses. Pref. the annular elements are in the form of truncated cones of catalytic material esp. Cu or its alloys.
