Organic materials and water, contaminated by radioactive substances on or dissolved in them, are supplied with oxygen to an oxidation chamber. The chamber is held at high temp. air pressure so that the organic waste materials are oxidised and thus sepd. from the radioactive substances on them while remaining in the chamber. Oxidn. heat evaporates some of the water. Vapour and gases are removed from the top of the chamber and unoxidised sludge contg. radioactive material is removed from the bottom. - Process may be used to deal with low level radioactive waste from nuclear power stations, including for example rags, paper, plastics and rubber. Process is simple and economic and concentrates the radioactivity in a low vol. sludge.
