A process for sepn. of residual H2SO4 from a reaction mixt. obtd. by reacting paraffins with SO2, O2 and H2O under irradiation, comprises (1) degassing the mixt. at elevated temp. to remove SO2 and concentrating the mixt. to remove the greater part of the H2SO4, and (2) treating the conc. product phase with sufficient of an alkali carbonate, -peroxide, -hydroxide, -sulphate or -sulphonate to convert the residual H2SO4 into alkali bisulphate.
