The mixed construction debris (70) is tipped onto a shallow bunker (10), material (72, 74) unsuitable for the system being separated out by presorting (71). The other presorted material (73, 75) is conveyed directly into a comminution machine (27). The remaining mixed construction debris is fed to a screening drum (14), the fine fraction (76) of which is taken to an external landfill site (78) and the coarse fraction (77) of which is taken to the discharge site of the comminution machine (27). The screen overflow (78) of the screening drum (14) is subject to manual sorting (79) by means of which various material components (80) are separated out. The overflow (81) from manual sorting is comminuted in the comminution machine (27) and merged with the coarse fraction (77). The combined material passes to a magnetic separator (28) in which the ferrous metal (82) is electromagnetically separated out. The residual material (83) is fed to an air classifier (45) and is there separated into a combustible component (85) and into a material component (84) for the landfill site (78). The system is simple in construction and requires few personnel. Despite this, relatively many components can be separated out and passed on for reclamation, so that a considerable reduction of the material to be taken to the landfill site is achieved.
