A pallet loading apparatus wherein a carrying-in unit (4 or 104) for supplying articles (B) to be loaded and a carrying-out unit (3 or 103), having a pallet (P) placed thereon for loading, are disposed adjacent to each other, includes an upright post (21 or 111) in the vicinity of said units, and an elongate horizontal lift (22 or 112) which is movable up and down on the post (21 or 111). In a first embodiment (Fig. 1) a trolley (31) is movable in a horizontal direction along the lift between the carrying- in and carrying-out units, and has suspended therefrom a holding mechanism (41) for holding the articles. The articles are transferred and loaded onto the pallet (P) by holding a row of articles which are carried into the carrying-in unit (2), in the holding mechanism (41) and transferring the thus held articles to the pallet (P) at the carrying-out unit (3) both by the ascent and descent of the lift (22) and the horizontal movement of the trolley (31). In another embodiment (Fig. 10), a horizontal trolley (121) which extends transversely to the lift (112), is movable horizontally along the lift (112) and mounts a carriage (131) which is movable horizontally therealong and suspends a holding mechanism (141) for the articles.
