A hydraulic shock absorber assembly comprises a piston rod 3 connected at one end to a piston working in a cylinder 2 and at the other end to a fixture 4 for connection to a vehicle axle. The fixture 4 is screwed on to an external thread on the end of the piston rod 3 and is held by a lock nut 7 having an unthreaded cylindrical portion 11 extending over an unthreaded portion of the piston rod and press- fitted thereto so as to transfer the maximum bending moment to a point on the unthreaded portion of the piston rod 3, thus greatly improving the durability of the assembly.
