[Also in Division C5] An additive for insulating oils comprises a petroleum paraffin mixed with a copolymer of esters of ethylenically unsaturated mono-acids derived from C 8 -C 18 alcohol and C 1 -C 6 alcohol. Specified copolymers are C 8 -C 18 methacrylate/methyl methacrylate, or butyl methacrylate, and lauryl methacrylate/methyl methacrylate. The paraffin is a mixture of solid hydrocarbons or a microcrystalline paraffin. The additive is prepared by prepolymerizing the esters using, e.g. t-butyl perbenzoate as initiator, adding the paraffin, either melted or in solution, and continuing polymerization. The polymerization is stopped by lowering the temperature and/or adding, e.g. an antioxidant such as p-di-t-butyl cresol. The additive obtained in dissolved in insulating oil. |
