1360015 Coated abrasives NORTON CO 21 June 1971 [19 June 1970 10 May 1971] 29031/71 Heading C4V A coated abrasive material comprises a flexible backing member having an adhesive bond on its front surface, to which are bonded abrasive grains and a layer on top of the adhesive bond comprising an elastomeric polymer of a conjugated diene monomer, or elastomeric copolymer thereof, the polymer or copolymer having a degree of residual unsaturation that would be indicated by an iodine number of at least 105, which is active in increasing the cutting ability of the coated abrasive material. The elastomer may be a homopolymer of butadiene or a copolymer thereof with acrylonitrile or styrene. Carboxylated butadienestyrene copolymers, preferably containing no less than 50% of the conjugated diolefin, copolymers containing acrylic and methacrylic acids, or a partial ester of itaconic, fumaric and maleic acids may also be used. Grinding aids such as metal fluorides may be incorporated with the elastomer. Suitable materials are specified. The backing member may be paper, cloth, laminates of these or vulcanized fibre material. The maker and size coats may be of phenol-formaldehyde resin. Suitable abrasive grains are silicon carbide, alumina and zirconiaalumina. |
