PURPOSE:To obtain contour information on an image pattern stably and speedily by extracting contour points of the image pattern, and calculation connection component information at each contour point and recognizing the image pattern. CONSTITUTION:A contour tracking start point is fixed at S1 and a value (i) indicating the number of a contour point to be extracted is increased by one so as to extract a number of contour points corresponding to the length of a code train, e.g. 20 points among contour points of an original pattern. Then, the value (i) is discriminated a next contour point is found unless i>20 to calcu late the integral distance l from the tracking start point. A check on l>Lx(i-1)/20 (L: overall contour length) is made to decide whether the number of sampling points exceeds 20 or not, and when so, the point is determined as Si to extract contour points shown by hatched parts. Then, directions of segments connecting adjacent contour extraction points are found and direction differences from last directions are quantized and encoded to obtain a code train showing contour information. |
