An electrode (33) comprises a contact block with a flat side wall in contact with a partition wall. The side wall has one or more grooves open at both ends to the space bounded by the partition wall. Pref. a contact block forming a control electrode has a central port at right angles to the partition wall and communicating with a groove in the block. The port is connected to a reference gas source so that the gas circulates through the port and the slot. Pref. the control electrode is attached to one end of a support rod containing a wire connecting the electrode to a recorder and wires connecting it to a thermocouple.
