A vacuum pump (1) is proposed, having an inlet (2) and outlet (3) and, downstream of the outlet, a barrier (4), which is designed in the manner of a siphon and prevents the ingress of water vapour or oxygen, and which comprises a housing partially filled with a barrier fluid (7) and a plunge pipe (8) arranged therein; the plunge pipe is bent, in the region of its end submersed into the barrier fluid, and is designed in such a way that its terminal orifice (17) is above the liquid level of the barrier fluid and that below the liquid level of the barrier fluid there is a straight pipe section (19) with perforations (18); to avoid unwanted turbulence at low to medium gas flow rates, the straight pipe section (19) is designed to have a slight downward gradient with respect to the direction of the gas stream and with respect to the horizontal. <IMAGE>
