A branched-stream valve assembly (42) for use in a flowmeter (10) having a housing (12), an inlet port (20), an outlet port (38), a duct for the fluid for the purpose of flow connection of the inlet port (20) with the outlet port (38), and a throughput-sensitive element (16) in the duct for the fluid comprises an appliance body (44) in the form of a tube having an open end (46) which is attached to the flowmeter housing (12) in such a way that it is aligned towards the flowmeter inlet port (20). In the interior (52) of the tube (44) a valve element (54) is provided. This has a compression spring (64) acting on it in the direction of its "closed" position and in this position passes all of the inflow to the flowmeter through the duct for the fluid. If the throughput of the fluid into the flowmeter (10) exceeds a predetermined value, the valve element (54) is moved against the elastic force of the compression spring (64) in the direction of its "open" position, with the result that the inflow to the flowmeter (10) is diverted directly to the flowmeter outlet port (38). <IMAGE>
