In a can opener having a toothed transport wheel (4) which can be driven on a supporting structural member (1) and grips the edge (24) of the can from below, and having a cutter (10) which serves to cut off the top (26) of the can and can be pivoted from a contact position, in which the can opener can be placed in contact with the edge of the can, into a cutting position, a guiding strip (18) is provided, which is situated opposite the circumferential edge of the transport wheel and can be pressed by the force of a spring (9) against that side of the edge (24) of the can which is facing away from the transport wheel (4). The guiding strip (18) is attached to a supporting plate (7) which is mounted by means of a slot (22) on the spindle (6) of the cutter bearing. As a result of this, the guiding strip (18) can move radially in relation to the transport wheel (4) and can be pivoted together with the cutter (10) into the contact position. This design leads to automatic and reliable puncturing and cutting and frictional resistance is kept low during cutting (Figure 1.). <IMAGE>
