Method for cleaning the side wall surfaces of submarines on both sides of seagoing ships while under way. The ship's speed decreases, i.e. the resistance increases, due to algae and barnacle fouling. The object of the device is to employ onboard means in order to remove this fouling, which frequently forms suddenly and unforeseeably. The carriage, which has runners running in forwards, is, on the one hand, pressed against the ship's side by the slipstream impinging on the inclined surfaces and, on the other hand, driven alternately upwards and downwards with the aid of a rudder (see sketch with plan view and side view). The carriage is retained by a retaining cable which extends around the ship's bow, and paid out astern in centimetres after each operation. The runners of the carriage can be arranged permanently or exchangeably, and additionally be provided with cleaning apparatuses such as rotating or fixed brushes, etc. The device is to be handy and not too heavy. Many ways are possible for automatic, or else automatable operation and height control, and for paying out astern. <IMAGE>
